hi m8. could be any number of reasons from........ Minor probs..... 1, too much oil in sump 2, valve guide wear (head off job!) 3, ignition fault ie, HT lead, Plug cap, Distributer cap, Dodgy plug.... or Major probs...usually acompanied with low/no compression and large ammounts of blue-white smoke!... 1, broken piston ring 2, damaged valve (head off job!) 3, holed piston or 4, cracked piston either way, with these problems, I think its an engine out job....sorry!

which problem do u recomend i check first?? and how might i go about this??

O.K.....the first thing to check for the worst case scenario is the compression which is best done with a gauge that screws into the spark plug hole...this tells you if there is sufficient pressure in each cylinder when engine is cranked over and how much...Best done with a hot engine as piston rings will have expanded to do their job properly. But if you dont have access to a compression meter, stick your thumb over the spark plug hole and have someone turn the engine over with the starter motor(disconnect all H.T. leads first) this should give you some idea if a cylinder is not pressurizing for any reason or if a cylinder is giving less pressure than the others but to know just how much , you really need that guage. as for the minor probs ..just look over first for general condition and replace if nessesary things like dizzy cap, spark plugs+caps, H.T leads and points as these are dead cheap to replace and should be junked if you suspect them as the cost of new items is so cheap, Its not worth trying to salvage old, knackered components. these seemingly minor parts are often overlooked but can transform the performance of your mini hope this helps to solve your probs..... Roy. P.S check your valve clearences as well.......you never know.....

oiled up spark plugs!
to adjust the mixture on a mini (su carb) you will see at the bottom of the carb there is a pipe running from the float chamber to the choke mechanisem (spelling) follow that up and youll see a nut,, this is how you adjust the mixture on a mini (for idle anyway) dont forget to use either a gas analyser ( quite expencive but i get a lot of use out of mine and even a cheap one is better then,,) a colourtune, your best bet though is just to pop it into a garage and get then todo it ( get friendly enough with them and they may let you do it your self,, all for the price of a beer)

1380cc 10:1cr Fast Road Engine - Spark Plugs?
I have 7s in mine. 8s might be a bit too cold unless you are running at high revs for long periods. Check them after a while and see what they look like and adjust them based on that. See http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/techinfo/spark_plugs/overviewp2.asp?nav=31000&country=US for more info.
Expect the car to be a little more difficult to start on 7s. I know a few prople with road rally minis and they tend to start the car with 6s, get it warm and then change to 7s or 8s for running.

also does anyone know what the correct gap for these plugs should be when using a lucas sports coil?
Thanks

Hi,
BP6ES with a 0.8mm gap, BP7ES is one step colder but you shouldn''t need it unless other mods have been carried out (mainly CR of over 10). I run my 1330 stage 3 head 266 cam on BP6ES and have found the BP7ES to be a tad too cold other than in track conditions.
The gap should be made smaller or larger depending on the coil you use but 'ive found 0.8 to work with just about anything on a 1275.
Byeeeee!

Nothing like the NGK BP 6ES they are the best, although Bosh has a range I'm not sure of the number.

Eating through Spark Plugs every 1000 miles!!! HELP!
Hi, every thousand miles or so my mini just wont start. A new set of plugs (NGK) remedies this but its really annoying! My car is set up fine (It seems so, not rich or lean) and its a 998 standard (99H) engine.
Perhaps the garage are fitting the wrong type of plugs?I shouldnt think so.
Wondering if any of you guys could give me advice on this one.

What do the plugs look like when you remove them?

NGK BP6ES is the correct type of spark plug for a 998cc Mini I believe?

Ill post here tommorow and let you guys/girls know what colour or how mucked up the plugs are.

is your engine running hot or have you modded /tuned up in any way or you could just have too soft/cold plugs. look for deformed/melted center electrodes and white center insulation. if just deformed use harder/hotter plug. if center insulation is white and has a glazed appearance then richen up your fuel mixture before you blow a hole in your pistons!!!
Could be caused by incorrect carb settings or an air leak in induction system. Look for leaky gaskets, Vacuum hoses and the rubber fittings on the end of vacuum hoses as if they're anything like mine then they are well shot! especially at the carb end of the vac hose for the dizzy advance, often overlooked as is a pain to remove and fit because of the bracket for the airbox being in the way...

I imagine if they've fitted NGK BPR6ES Spark Plugs (the "R" denotes "Resistor for electronic ignition equpped later Minis) instead of BP6ES then I'd say you could have problems due to that too?
